Introduction to Yuchengyi Scenic Area

2025-05-07

Yucheng Post Station is located at No. 13, Guanyi Lane, Nanmen Waiguan, Gaoyou City, Jiangsu Province. It was established in the eighth year of the Ming Hongwu reign (1375) and is an important water horse post station along the Beijing Hangzhou Grand Canal. According to records, at that time, the entire post station had 5 main halls and 5 rear halls, 3 warehouses, 14 corridor rooms, 20 stables, 3 front drum towers, 1 screen wall tower, 1 post office residence, and more than 100 halls during its heyday. There were also 65 post horse areas, 18 post ships, and over 200 horsemen and water men.

Yucheng Post Station inherits the postal style of Qinting, Hanshe, Tangguan, Songzhan, and Yuanchi from Gaoyou, demonstrating the charm of one of the birthplaces of postal stations. Before Emperor Qin Shi Huang unified China in 223 BC, he had already built a high platform and set up a postal pavilion here, hence the name Gaoyou. As early as the Western Han Dynasty, on the main post road from Chang'an in the capital to Huaisi and reaching the Yangtze River, Gao Youting undertook heavy postal tasks. The excavation and expansion of the Grand Canal in the Sui Dynasty, as well as the emergence of the riverside imperial road, created favorable conditions for the "postal road" (i.e. parallel water horse post roads) that lasted for over a thousand years in Gaoyou.

During the Tang Dynasty, Li Jifu built Pingjin Weir in Gaoyou and lived in Gaoyou Houguan, which served as a post station. During the Song Dynasty, Gaoyou built city walls and established the Yinghua Post Station on Jiuwu Street outside the prosperous North Gate. This is one of the earliest recorded post stations in Gaoyou. In the second year of Zhihe in the Northern Song Dynasty, Wang Anshi came to Gaoyou to meet with local sages such as Wang Ling at the post office. During the Song Dynasty, Gaosha Pavilion was established in the southwest of Gaoyou City. In the Yuan Dynasty, there was Gaoyou Post Station located outside the bustling West Gate. During the Zhizheng period, it was renamed Qinhuai Post Station and later renamed Qin Post Station.

In the 36th year of the Jiajing reign of the Ming Dynasty (1557), the ancient post station was destroyed by Japanese fire and almost became a ruin. Later, Yucheng Post was able to regain its glory, and in the second year of Longqing (1568), the governor Zhao Laiheng was appointed. The reconstruction of Yucheng Post has fulfilled the long cherished wish of ancient rulers to honor their ancestors and benefit future generations. In 1985, the well preserved Ming Dynasty Yucheng Post Station was discovered in the south of Gaoyou City. The history of postal stations in China spans over 3000 years, with tens of thousands of stations and delivery shops established throughout history, but the vast majority have disappeared. The late Ming Dynasty legacy of Yucheng Post is located behind the rebuilt Huanghua Hall in the mid Qing Dynasty. It is a place where post officials and Gaoyou officials receive various envoys and welcome guests from all directions. This is a building of the Ming Dynasty Yucheng Post Station that has been recognized by authoritative experts as "authentic".
